Cayman Brac is Paradise--No Crime, No Traffic, Beautiful Nature with Peace and Quiet.
Cayman Brac boasts prehistoric tropical forests still not seen by man in the heart of the Bluff, while there is plenty to see on both sides of the road on top of the Cayman Brac Bluff. The two lane roads were literally cut into the tropical forest, and are full of flowering plants, birds, lizards, butterflies, iguana, egrets and night heron.
Brown Booby Bird Family
Nesting At 150 Feet Above Sea Level
The Brown Booby Bird nests only at great heights found at the edge of the Bluff in Cayman Brac. Accessing their nesting grounds is safe and easy from the Lighthouse Walking Trail. It is possible to get very close to observe the chick in all of its growth stages. The white downy feathers must completely disappear before the first flight. The drop is to 150 feet with wind currents that aid the first flight of the chick. It will feed on fish from the ocean below and then return to the same area as a mature bird to breed.
Rice Paper Butterflies
Delicate Beauty
These butterflies were as thick as snow flurries and feeding on the many wildflower blooms. They stayed grouped together by the thousands in traveling flocks. Once the sun began to set they found bushes to give them shelter over night, and were mistaken for white flowers unless they were disturbed and fluttered airborne.
Birding On Shaded Trails
Parrot Reserve
Through the middle of the top of the Bluff is the Parrot Reserve Walking Trail. In addition to searching for the Green Cayman Parrot, you'll also have a chance to spot many of the migrating birds that pass through Cayman Brac. Resident birds are the Blue Footed Booby Bird, the Frigate Birds with their five feet wing span, and the Green Cayman Parrot, Woodpeckers, Doves and Snowy White Owl to name just a few.
The Parrot Reserve walking trail is shaded with the tall trees of the Bluff, and is an easy walk on the wood decking. There are a few steps along the trail, so a wheel chair driver will need some assistance. Benches for brief rests, and observation are sprinkled along the path as well.
